Snowmen at Night
Towards the end of Winter, Kindergarteners made Snowmen at Night Dioramas using model magic air drying clay, construction paper crayons, markers, black construction paper, and shaving cream and glue, which was the snow concoction. Students learned how to roll clay into forms like spheres, cylinders, and coils.
Fall LEaves
In this project, students were learning about warm colors and cool colors in art. They also learned about Crayon Resist, a process where they draw in crayon and paint over with Watercolor. Wax and water then work like Oil and water and don't mix, which causes this nice contrast of crayon and watercolor paint as a special art effect. Students also learned a little about why leaves change color in the fall. The reason for the change of leaves is the chlorophyll levels dwindling, as well as the temperature changes that come in Fall.
Kandinsky Hand Trees
In the Fall, Kindergarten and First grade students were introduced to art work by Wassily Kandinsky. Students then created Hand Trees with Circle Shaped leaves similar to the dots in our first project and painted sunset backgrounds with tempera paint. Students learned about the colors in the rainbow, as well as the colors that we see during sunset or sunrise.
The Dot
To start kindergarten and first grade art lessons this year, we read the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds, which provides good lessons on confidence in the art room for young kids, and teaches about the use of dots in art, as part of the basic building blocks of art work. Students made dot paintings based on the story.
2015-16
Rainbow Fish
As the last project of the year, students in Kinder and First grade practiced their step by step drawing and listening skills as we worked together draw fish underwater. Students then added extra designs to their pictures to give their work uniqueness. and colored their fish with bright colors of the rainbow.
Marble Painting
In the spring students learned about Jackson Pollock style painting. In Kinder and First we recreated a Jackson Pollock style of painting by rolling marbles around and through tempera paints in a tray to paint our pictures. Students learned about primary colors and mixing secondary colors.
Heart Collage
This february, Kinder and First grade classes worked on heart collages as a special project or Valentine's day, working with creating heart shapes using a pattern that they traced, and filling in their heart shapes with colored tissue paper. Students also filled in added designs on top with black marker.

Georgia O'Keeffe Abstract Flowers
This spring we learned about the art of Georgia O'Keeffe and focused on her unique way of painting flowers. Then students looked at photos of real flowers. From the photographs, students drew and painted their own flowers using warm and cool colors.
Geometric foil Pendants
In late winter, Kindergarteners and First graders worked on designing jewelry using tagboard and tinfoil and etching a design onto the foil using geometric shapes, line work, and patterns. After etching the design students stained the art work using black paint or ink to create an antiqued effect. The final step was to punch a hole in the relief sculpture, add string, and make their art into a pendant.
Stained Glass Designs
In Late November and into December, Kindergarteners studied stained glass. Students created an abstract line design on paper, and then traced their designs onto tracing paper with a construction paper frame. The students then traced the pencil lines on tracing paper with glue. During the second session of this project, students traced their glue lines with silver sharpies. The final step was to color in between the lines with markers.
Spider Collage
This October students studied Spiders and Collage, and learned how to trace shapes, cut out their shapes carefully, and how to make a spider web design with construction paper crayons. Students also worked on their gluing skills and were able to add googly eye stickers. The results were spooktacular!
Line Variety Art
In art class this fall, kindergartners learned about different kinds of lines. We went over how to draw all the different kinds of lines, and then we worked on tracing our pencil lines with markers and coloring in the rest of the page with crayons. With the line variety project, students learned about abstract art.
Portfolios
At the beginning of the year, students put together Portfolios to store their work in throughout the school year. Student work is kept in school to prepare for our student art shows that happen during the year around town and across the state for the State Fair. Students created art around the theme of Self Portraits, drawing a picture of themselves and showcasing their interests as well.
